体长，略呈圆筒形，尾柄细长。头锥形，吻突出。口下位，马蹄形。下颌无锐利角质。唇厚，极发达，下唇侧叶具皱褶，前部相连，唇后沟连续。须1对，位于口角，较粗，长大于眼径。体大部裸露，仅有臀鳞和肩带上方的少数肩鳞。背鳍不分枝鳍条为光滑软制；腹鳍起点与背鳍基部的后端相对。

the Genus Gymnodiptychus differs from Diptychus in having body entirely naked except a few scales above the pectoral axil and the anal scaly sheath. Mouth horse-shoe- shaped, lower jaw without horny edge, lower lip fleshy with a continuous postlabial groove. This species is found in the upper reaches of the Changjiang River and the Huanghe River; the maximum body length is about 600 mm.
